Do anyone know if burns and obstetrics will continue to be included in the CMS
sepsis quality measures? Reason for asking
- Burn patients have SIRS criteria present much of the time, at least
for the bigger burns who are most at risk for sepsis (temps, tachycardia,
leukocytosis, etc.). Using the standard SIRS criteria rarely works to help
identify sepsis reliably.
o ABA (American Burn Association) has recommended revised SIRS screening
criteria
o If you have a burn center in your facility, it could significantly skew
your results
o Do we know if burns will be excluded?
- I'm not as knowledgeable about obstetrics, but from what I hear they
also may have some of the SIRS criteria issues, especially while moms are
laboring.
