Subject: [Sepsis Groups] SEP-1 Data abstraction questions

HI Claudia,

Below are my responses in RED
I was hoping to possibly get some feedback from this listserv on SEP-1 data
abstraction:

1. How many SEP-1 abstractors do you have ? 1.3 FTE's

2. Are they full-time or part-time? 1 Full time/ 1 person who devotes 15
hours week.

3. Do they do anything else? Yes- Full time- functions as a sepsis
coordinator/patient safety roles/abstraction/Premier reporting and part time-
does sepsis and stroke abstractions

4. Are you using a software vendor? Premier

5. If so do you have skip logic turned off so you continue abstracting
data even if fallout? NO- we do real time and audit abstractions so we are
aware of most fall outs well before the CMS cases get loaded.

6. Do you do any additional abstraction outside of the vendor? (i.e. on a
spreadsheet)- Yes- Audit All of Critical Care- because that is where your
severe sepsis and septic shock patients will land. - Provide feedback
ED-ICU/Floor to ICU/became septic in ICU

7. Does the abstractor also send out feedback letters? Yes- Letters for
missed opportunities in real time audits/ Yes for missed opportunities with the
CMS sepsis charts.

8. On average how much time per chart is taking to abstract? 30 minutes

9. What metrics are reported to hospital/system leadership? 3 & 6 hour
bundles/ LOS/Mortality/Readmissions/Surgical Sepsis - how many came with Pre op
infection and went to OR for source control vrs how many developed post op
sepsis.

10. Who puts together the metrics/report/dashboard? Yes- full time position
who functions like a coordinator populates the dashboards and metrics.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
