You have been helping the way... submit patches to JIRA, run new ideas my the group, probably would be better to do some of this on the developer mailing list though. You can only wait for committers to step up, but you've done all you can for now.
If you wanted to be a committer, you can earn that by continuing to help over time. We want people who work want to make the code better, support the user community, and work well with a team.
