Well this is exaclty what I did.
The tomcat runs as a "tomcat" user, but the james server will not startup
or rather will not be available on smtp/pop port. it does start up without
any error but the server is not running.
Weired thing, there are no java process in ps -ef which does indicate a
running james server.
any idea?

does apache james has to run as root user?
i tried to run su -c $JAMES_HOME/bin/phoenix.sh start - james
eg. as "james" user.
