I'd like to play with James and all I have is a DSL connection...
When I look at the DSL router docs it says it can forward pop and smtp servers
In the quick start... it says set the DNS Report field to the domain name.
My system reports the DSL as the DNS...
Am I right in assuming all the DSL pop and smtp configurations really do is
provide a path to the service provider DNS.
So what do I need to do... if I have to phone my SP, I dont want to sound like
a complete idiot... ha ha
More questions...
Say I did have a leased line with my own DNS... is there no permission
required, if the DNS is set would James just cooperate with other mail servers?
I do run a dynamic DNS in the DSL router... so I do have an domain name, but a
varying ip adress...
If you have a dynamic IP then you probably want to use an SMTP gateway
for outgoing mail (because dynamic IP are often banned from receiving
smtp servers).
You should configure your RemoteDelivery gateway to include the smtp
server name you use to send emails via your provider.
Then, if I understand your needs, you will need to configure the
"fetchmail" block to retrieve messages from your POP3 account and
deliver the mail to local james inboxes (not sure this is what you want).
So I guess my question is how does one setup a mail server behind a DSL router... but I'm also trying to understand if permission is required from SP's before anything will work??
I don't think you need to change the DSL router for this as long as it
doesn't block outgoing connections to POP3 and SMTP ports (and I don't
think so or you wouldn't be able to use any Mail Client).
If you want to use it for incoming mail for a given domain then it is
much more complicate because you have a dynamic ip: fetchmail is
probably much more easier and safe.
Thanks
Oh... another question... these mailing lists, they fantastic and I was
wondering if James is the doing all this?
Unfortunately we are not self-hosted but we uses ASF-wide mailing list
server that is not James based.
