This was an interesting show. The 3GSM World Congress is the biggest annual mobile telecoms event in the world. Unlike IT, there is an absence of overwhelming US dominance, so it is a truly international event. Last year it was in Cannes, but now it has found a new home in Barcelona which not only has far greater capacity (Cannes is a neat but not very big town), but seems to be more efficient and better organised (Catalonia is generally far more dynamic, entrepreneurial and forward-thinking than Southern France). If you are interested in going next year (12th to 15th February inclusive), I would advise you, however, to book your accommodation well in advance. Barcelona is one of my favourite cities - if you do go next year, do yourself a favour and stay on for at least the following weekend.
The mobile part is the most dynamic piece of the recovering telecoms sector. The rash of new technologies, services and content on offer means that platform and application agility are becoming increasingly important. As you are probably aware, the telecoms sector is a vast consumer of IT resources and technology; the relationship is so technically intimate that the two sectors cannot really be separated. All the major platform software providers were at 3GSM. If you are looking for new opportunities in mobile telecoms at the software platform level, look at OSS/BSS, network, device and subscriber management, and mobile device configuration and upgrading. Value-added service and content provision are probably where opportunities are growing the fastest, as the mobile operators make strenuous efforts to recoup their huge capital investments in 2.5G and 3G infrastructure and licences. The major telecoms show next year is Telecom 2007. This takes place every 4 years in the autumn in Geneva. If anyone wants to discuss opportunities in telecoms in more detail , feel free to e-mail me.
