I have looked into this area fairly extensively, and the answer to the 
first part of your question is 'very useful'*.  Regarding heterogeneous 
environments, your options will be somewhat smaller (depending on your 
needs). Out-of-the box, enterprise class solutions will generally offer 
more than just a Java API. If you're willing to do more integration 
work, there are a lot more non-Java based systems out there that could 
be used in conjunction with other 3rd-party offerings to provide an 
enterprise-class solution. Of course, there are plenty of open source, 
research quality implementations that might be of interest if you are in 
the position of developing your own product.
