I've read Erl's previous book, SOA: Principles of Service Design, and was impressed with it's well-rounded treatment of issues in the design of services. Erl's definition of a service is more technical in nature than Steve Jones' in his book, but it is far from a cookbook for mere web services. In fact, I would highly recommend it for anybody implementing services. Personally, I'm interested in giving Erl's new book a read also, if I can ever find the time! -Kirstan
