I have used WebSphere 2.0.2 and it is basically almost a rewrite (or at
least feels like one ;->) of version 1.0x. If you want an application
server product with the strength of that architecture, then go with
WebSphere. It can hold its own with many other application servers on the
market, and its price, for standard or advanced versions, is a steal
compared to competitors. If you just want the ability to run servlets,
without IBM's data access, EJB, CORBA, etc. enhancements, then both JRun and
ServletExec are fine for that. I prefer ServletExec, simply because I like
the guys at New Atlanta, but, JRun has also proven to hold its own.

WebSphere is not positioned to be in a class with JRun and ServletExec. It
is positioned as an application server designed to compete with Oracle App
Server, WebLogic Tengah, Apple WebObjects, et al. It depends on what you
need whether the new WebSphere is perfect or overkill.

Just ask me if you have any more specific questions on WebSphere.

Thanks,
Chris Parkerson
