As far as I've ever read, "Java OS" is a concept that has and will exist in a
few different forms (PCs, NCs, small devices, etc...) In most cases there is
talk of using a chip hard coded for running Java, and in all cases the idea was
to move object-orientedness to a new sort of physical sense, wherein the
objects in, say, your kitchen could all communicate with each other because
they all ran on Java. (Thus your furnace would adjust it's settings based on
whether or not your oven was broiling something, or you could program your VCR,
coffee maker, and water softener from your PC, etc...) I think that this was
one of the original primary motivations for the creation of Java.
(The other features of Java that always get touted as the reasons it's so
nice (security, garbage collection, multithreadness, etc...) are remnants of
the fact that Java was developed in modern (from a computing standpoint) times,
and were not necessarily the motivation for the creation of a new language.)
