I am sure that you have received all kinds of book recommendations.

What most people don't mention is that the best place to acquire a
broad understanding of servlets, HTTP, etc.... is in the archives of
the SERVLET-INTEREST mailing list:

The archives are also the best place to find answers to your
specific questions because about 60% of the postings to this list were
asked and answered already.
