Make life simple, just choose 1 mail system, and have the gateways do the
rest of the work.
All your application needs to do, is talk to 1 mail server, not every mail
server (unless their site is broken).

1. No, but a little knowledge wouldn't hurt (eg. max message line length) so
that outbound message look reasonable.
2. Yep, it can do what you need.
