Ability of the protocol to go through firewalls is certainly an issue
and basically rules out RMI and sockets.

CORBA is a very versatile option for communication between
for communication between applets and java server components,
however, it is only supported on Netscape or on other browsers
with the Sun Java plug-in or with additional jar downloads.
Using http tunnelling to communicate between applets and servlets
more or less works on any browser that supports Java. Therefore,
it is what we use.
