Fist off I would get a good book on the basics like "Thinking in Java" by
Bruce Eckels. This book is free online. I see so many people who want to
instantly program in Java and do things like server-side progamming with
little or no foundation, this forum is full of them - no one seems to want
to do the work to get a good grounding in the language - their part of the
"instant generation" (I know what a Servlet is, but what's polymorphism?)
kind of thinking. Also you need to know internet basics like TCP\IP and
state management etc to understand Servlets and JSP. Lastly if you have
these basics I use JRun 3.0 application server which will plug right into
IIS web server. It supports the Servlet API 2.2 and JSP 1.1. and it's free
for development purposes. Also I have just started learning Servlets and I
have read and been told that server-side Java programming is where the money
is at as far as Java programming. If Java is just a lot of hype like I have
heard, then the last year and half I have spent learning the basics has been
an exercise in futility - read the trade journals and join a local users
group and talk to professional Java programmers - figure it out - Good luck
