I thought about setting up my own server and doing the same, but how would
you get a fast enough back bone for the actual band width

This topic seems to come up often on this list. Search the
archives for the word ISP and you will get some hits.

I went for self-hosting (using Tomcat) after trying out an ISP
for a while. Gives one greater flexibility and some headaches.
