I'm not a college student (been more than a decade), nor do I play games online or do file sharing, but I feel the need to disagree with you, Art - sorry.
For one thing I fail to understand where the aforementioned people using the web would put high loads on the SETI servers. Unless, of course, they're running seti@home and submitting hundreds of wu's per day. (complaints, anyone?) Secondly, the net has gone far beyond just scientific and informational purposes. I can't say I like that either, but such demand has produced the huge expansion in web services, cheaper equipment and available connections that we all enjoy. That said, we all have to live with it; complaining about bandwidth problems won't get us anywhere (although we could start putting spammers in the stocks; they seem to be eating up a lot more bandwidth than anyone else judging from my daily dose of viagra emails.) If the seti servers are busy, that means that either more people out there are working on the problem; or that possibly, the server admins there are having problems of their own with hardware/software and hopefully they can keep things running, it's a huge and complicated job (I know, I spend a lot of time troubleshooting for my local ISP) I would suspect that by now the seti people have as much bandwidth as they can use, and the problems we're seeing have a different cause. I would however love to see more detailed comments from the admins; (guys?) I know you're busy, but many people are devoting time to your cause and they deserve to know what's going on. In any case, I see reports every day that spamming is up almost 500% since November, and I would suspect that is more likely related to the problems than college students playing Unreal Tournament or whatever.
