What you're seeing here is something that worked by chance in 2.0.5 (but
really didn't) because breadcrumbs or other items in the traversal path
errored on security checks.
What you're looking for (having the permission inherited down the tree)
requires that you change the workflow slightly:
http://plone.org/documentation/how-to/make-permission-settings-inherit
You could still get to the content below that folder in the 2.0.5 site if
you knew how - it was just not apparent from clicking around.

i also checked the settings for the permissions tab for a
members_only_workflow and confirmed that they match exactly what they
should be for a members_only folder. For the View and Access contents
informaiton permissions, Acquire is unchecked and Anonymous is
unchecked. What happens is the folder is not visible in the navigation
tree, but it is directly accessible by keying in the url in the
browser. However, with the plone 2.0.5 version, typing in the url
produces a login screen - the correct behavior. i'm really stuck at
this point. would installing VerboseSecurity help? I'm not
experiencing an error, just wrong behavior. Thanks very much for your
help so far.

I did this by copying/pasting and renaming the folder_workflow and
modifying permissions for the states so that Anonymous can't view or
access anything. This worked fine for members_only_folders in 2.0.5,
but Anonymous userscan view/access contents in members_only_folders
in 2.1.1.
I noticed in my migration from 2.0.5 to 2.1.1 that the workflow
that was associated with folderish types had been reset to
Plone's default. See this bug:

If this is your problem as well, go to ZMI > portal_workflow >
Workflows and reassign your custom workflow to your folderish
types the way they were in your 2.0.5 situation.
And I guess 'Update security settings' may be needed after that.
