Well, I've officially given up on Plone. I'll be using twiki instead and having each individual user migrate their own data from the old plone site to the new twiki.
I sincerely appreciate everyone's help on this - the Plone community (here and on #plone) is one of the most patient and helpful I've encountered, and I thank you all.
