I have just verified that there is no buildout file or folder in our old installation. As buildout is the "recommended way" and the transition from non-buildout to buildout includes installing a buildout version and copying the data.fs, I'll take this route.
I'll create a new topic on having several Data.fs and asking how to migrate.
