I can see a pain point there, but can we not avoid it by linking to the library's new (or old) location? Just from reading through this list, I can see that libvirt, Ruby, and probably Mysql(assuming based on the existence of /usr/sfw/include/mysql/readline.h) are statically linking in readline. There are probably more(didn't really search). Putting it into the OS, seems like it will save pain for application developers in the aggregate. Just my 0.02, -ps
