Yes, I had to google to get to know about this option. Wonder, why this 
is not the default.  Other weird things

- to run :set nu, I had to type very slowly. if I type on a usual speed, 
:set nu becomes :snu. This was not the case, when I had gvim from blastwave
- the default font seems to of that of 'Mono' family instead of the 
conventional ones like courier, arial etc
