By default, it doesn't understand/read/write GIF's. But, because of the 
callback 
mechanism, it is possible to extend libmng, by rewriting the 
mng_openstream()/mng_closestream()/mng_readdata() callbacks which understand 
GIF's.

AFAIK, the GIF patent has expired, though.
