You'll want to document in the case the reasonable compatibility expectations going forward. It's also good to document both the upstream provider's compatibility policy (if they have one) as well as the actual historical track record (which may or may not be the same as the policy). I read to the end of the thread and looks like all that info is already been discussed so just include a summary in the spec. Now, if qt is always compatible within major release family (all 4.* are compatible), why would it need 4.x.y versioned directories? That's creating a lot of work for every future bug fix.
