Adds dir to the list of directories searched for
libraries by ld. This option and its arguments are
passed to ld.
Warnings
Never specify the compiler installation area,
/usr/include, /lib, /usr/lib, as search directories.

It is because cc always searches those path, and it has to search them in
specific order which you can break by -L
Moreover you should not link to $(ROOT)/usr/lib...

It would be great if you could spend some time polishing the Makefile
- do not pass variables to make and configure via env, but rather
directly on commandline
- use macros like $(UNPACKARCHIVE), $(TOUCH), $(MKDIR), $(MV), $(RMDIR)
