Hi Andy,

This doesn't really help answer any questions or explain why SGD is deviating from Sun Strategy (at least in my view ).

I have done some of my own digging and contacted my local Sun office since reading the earlier posting about SGD no longer being free (like a puppy). WRT the local Sun office, they were not really aware that SGD had been dropped from the Solaris Enterprise System site. One sales person did try to convince me that SGD was never part of SES - hhmm, maybe those press releases are wrong? And, why was I able to download it from there? Note that I also contracted for Sun at that time...

As for deviating from Sun strategy, SGD was originally part of the Solaris Enterprise System but has since then been removed, why? "Free software creates volumes that lead the demand for deployments - which generate license and support revenues just as they did before the products were free." -Jonathan Schwartz

One could argue that SGD is still as "free" as it was but instead folks now need to contact the local Sun office for extended licenses. So, how does a new potential customer become aware of this? Before, the Solaris Enterprise site had a note and email address to send requests to. Now, I can't find anything mentioning that this option even exists. Also, it gets really scary when blog entries related to this are removed. Well, Google cache still has it.

To me this all seems a little strange, missing blog entries, the removal of SGD from the SES site without any notification or even a posting to this list. Whatever happened to transparency and breaking down barriers?

So what's my point? How do people who fit into this definition

"[...] developers. Or startups. Or companies or economies that want to build their own internal support teams. [...] " -Jonathan Schwartz

acquire and deploy SGD without fear of needing to purchase licenses down the road? And, how do you ensure folks such as myself, who recently deployed SGD into an environment already running Citrix get access to the necessary & accurate information about SGD licensing and its availability. Is it free or not? Is it safe for me to use SGD as an alternative to Citrix and put Sun (& my Sun Sales Rep) in a position where we can (overtime) convince certain folks to stop using Citrix and maybe perhaps eventually buy SGD licenses if they so choose?

I only ask for a clear message. I thought this was a good one:

Sun says:
"After discussions with customers and partners we've improved how people can evaluate SGD... We can now provide customers with a license key for whatever number of users they need, and for the length of evaluation they need. We simply need to know:
how long the evaluation period should be?
how many users you need?
e.g. "we'll be looking at this over the next 60 days, and will test with a user population of 1000."

This customer-focused approach allows the customer to evaluate the product on their own terms and in their own timescales."

No it's not. It's listed as "4.2". The correct version is 4.2.XXX where XXX is the build number. Since Sun doesn't release actual patches for SGD
but instead rebuilds the whole thing. The only way to find out what the
latest build is, is to download it. (or wait for someone to post about the
new release here or on the Sun SGD forum group)

Fair point - I'll chase this up.

I think Sun at least owes the public an explanation of why the change to
SGD's licensing model.

I'll chase this up too - customers would have rec'd an explanation at the time and I thought something had been posted to the list. Let me get an official response and get it posted here.
