Lyle,

Yet another "Duh!" award for me. . .

Ok people - here is the REAL, real news.

1. Shoot the admin.

2. In order for STN to know what the h**l is goin' on, you have to make
sure it is the default route. This is complicated in an NT based
system, since you can do all kinds of stupid things, and WINS will cover
yer ass. . . and you are wandering around fat, dumb, happy, and
clueless. . . !

What this means is that in an NT based system, if you're using NT DHCP,
make sure that global or scope paramater 003 (router) is set to point to
the STN box. Remove ALL default gateway parms on any local machine.

3. In order to dial out, (now that you are actually -TALKING- to it!),
it needs an IP address, or something that resolves to an IP address.
This is taken care of by STN's DNS when you set the default nameserver
as a nameserver on the outside of the net.

In an NT based system, where STN is -NOT- providing name services, you
have to set the DNS servers parm (006) to point to your ISP's
nameserver(s). Again, if there are any -LOCAL- DNS settings, nuke any
addresses in the local DNS tables on the win boxes. Remember - the
settings provided by the DHCP server will -OVERRIDE- the local settings!
You may think you're set just fine, but DHCP will write zippo into any
local parm you don't have a DHCP setting for.

4. Underscores in machine names are bad news. (Even though Unix
-LOVES- the things, and the URL spec says they're OK, the DNS spec
apparently is all down on them.) Some routers who take the DNS spec to
heart, won't recognize machine names with underscores in them. (Thanks
to Ken T. for this tidbit!!)

Jim

p.s. maybe someone should write a STN HOW-TO?
