You really don't need the STN if you get the Cabletron router. It's uses
NAT already and has a full featured firewall if you want to use that for
public IP access to stuff. But Ameritech is giving it away with a 1 year
commitment.
On the 'home' use, they give you an ATM card(it's PCI and has to be
installed in a Windows machine).

Subject: [ShareTheNet] What about STN and PPPoE (used by DSL providers)
I got this from Sonicwall's web site. I'm putting this out for
knowledge sake. They have added a patch to their routers, as had
Linksys for their cable/dsl router to allow PPPoE authentication. It
appears that Sonicwall and Linksys didn't support PPPoE until just
recently.
I'm in the Chicago area and Ameritech DSL for home use is $39.00 per
month but uses PPPoE. Their business accounts are $69.00 dollar per
month but you have to buy a Cabletron router which supports PPPoE. I
suspect one can use the $39.00 per month account with STN (if it
supports PPPoE).
Does STN support PPPoE and if not, I think this is very important to
implement as Ameritech DSL, and I'm sure others as well, require this.
I've been using STN with cable and dialup with no hitch. But haven't
tried with DSL yet. Just hoping to head off a potential nightmare.
------ the following is from Sonicwall.com ------
What is PPPoE?
PPPoE stands for Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet and is based on
two widely accepted standards, Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and
Ethernet. PPPoE is a method for personal computers to connect to a
broadband service (typically DSL). PPPoE is being deployed in many
residential broadband services.
Why are ISPs using PPPoE in their broadband services?
The theory is that PPPoE makes it easier for the end user of broadband
services to connect to the Internet by simulating a Dial-up connection.
The
ISP realizes significant advantages because much of the existing Dial-up
infrastructure (billing, authentication, security, etc.) can be used for
DSL
and other broadband services.
How do you connect to the Internet using PPPoE?
Along with a broadband modem, the ISP will install a software
application
on your computer that asks for a username and password. After this
information is provided, the connection is established allowing the user
to
access the Internet.
What are some problems with PPPoE?
Multiple accounts- The biggest problem with PPPoE in the residence is
that the ISP requires the customer to have a PPPoE account for each
computer attempting to access the Internet. Each computer must be
running the software application and have a username and password.
Home networking- Many home networking products don't support PPPoE,
and if they do, configuration can be increasingly complex.
Performance- There can also be a decrease in performance caused by the
overhead required by PPPoE. In addition to sending the data and the
Ethernet addresses and routing information, the PPPoE information must
also be sent, adding to the overall bandwidth required for the
transmission.
How does the SonicWALL support PPPoE?
With the release of the latest SonicWALL firmware (version 4.2.1.p2), it
is
no longer necessary to use the software provided by your ISP to connect
to the Internet. The username and password are entered once in either
the
SonicWALL installation wizard or the Web management interface and then
the connection is automatically established and maintained.
Can I have one PPPoE account for multiple computers in my home?
Yes. Using SonicWALL's PPPoE firmware, it is possible to have multiple
computers share a single account from your service provider. This can
save
time and money in the setup and monthly fees of multiple PPPoE
accounts.
