One of the things you may need to do is use the config program for the
3c509's and make sure you set them up to non-conflicting settings and make
sure STN is told what the I/O ports and IRQ's are assigned.  I have used
both ne2000 clones and 3c509's with no problem.

The key to useing them is to set them up to known states and make sure they
are not conflicting with each other or with other hardware on your
motherboard and tell STN what resources are being used.

No it is an external one. I have done some more investigating. If I put 2
3com 3c509's STN won't see them. If I mix 1 NE200 and one 3com it will see
the NE2000 but not the 3com and 2 NE2000 will cause it only to see one of
them. Freesco will boot and work with any of the three configs. I hate
Freesco so keeping it is not an option. I want to go back to STN.
