Chances are the cable modem port is 1/2 duplex and if this is the case
connecting a full duplex card to it will cause excessive collisions
and retries.
I did have problems with an "auto" speed card deciding that the cable
modem was 100meg capable (which it wasnt) and sometimes it wouldnt
establish at all untill I forced the cards configuration to 10meg.
