I, too, have seen this info about write-protecting the disk, but also have found it doesn't work. STN does periodically write to the floppy. It logs information, like the lease grants, as you have found. I don't know if you can turn logging off (is that a setting when you build the disk? Been so long since I built mine). As for removing the disk and then putting it back in while the system is running, no, you absolutely cannot do this in ANY unix/linux installation. You must unmount the disk first. I have never tried the umount command on STN, so I can't say for sure whether or not you could umount, remove, reinsert, and mount.. If you try it, let us know.
