Follow-up:

Here's my game plan:

I compiled the new SOHOware (tulip) driver based on the source files
they provided. I tried substituting it for the existing STN tulip.o
driver (just for grins-and-giggles). As expected, not only did it not
work, it did not work in the big way. (froze system) This is to be
expected since they are based on different kernel revisions.

Since I do not have a system running based on the kernel revision that
STN uses, (I -do- have the RH 6.n and 7.n versions though), I figure
that the best I can do is try to "update" STN to the new kernel. (so we
can create modules for it if we wish. . .)

I downloaded the tar-ball for the "free" version to examine it. I am
going to try to see exactly how it is put together - and what has to be
done to

(a) update to the latest kernel (using RH 7.0's new kernel as my target)

(b) compile new ".o" modules for it based on that kernel build.

Ultimately, what I want to do is to be able to provide, or provide
instructions on how to create, a new kernel, ramdisk, and other things
needed to make STN run. Hopefully, they could be substituted for the
existing items in the production STN install, which would allow us to
use the existing commercial STN install to build updated systems.

I am still researching this - and will post my results here when I know
more.
