As a shot in the dark - my favorite debugging technique - I set the
external submask to 0.0.0.0 and it worked - I can't explain why I can
route through a cable modem with a 10.x.x.x address or why a zero
submask works; But it does!
The picture looks like this:
Internal STN NIC: 192.168.0.1 (gateway for internal network)
Internal Submask: 255.255.255.0
External STN NIC: 208.59.204.185
External Submask: 0.0.0.0
Gateway: 10.17.61.170 (address of cable modem)
