Steve,
How true you are!
Living in the northeast (Ma) our power does funky things on occasion too
- and yes I have UPS's on them. This protects me from glitches, line
transfers and short term outages. However, when a 'noreaster comes
barreling thru - with 50+ knot winds, and a 300+ year old oak tree keels
over taking down wires, poles, cars, etc... a UPS doesn't do much.
(grin!)
I've acutally taken it down (for experimental purposes - to attach
something else to the cable modem - or to re-arrange the wiring and
layout of my lab) - more often than that. Eventually, I am hoping to
get things settled down, put the STN box up on a shelf, attach a
deep-cycle marine battery to the UPS, and let the good times roll.
Bottom line. I've taken it down manually because I -wanted- to, I have
NEVER had to take it down because I -needed- to, and it has -never-
"crapped-out" on me.
Prior to the STN box, I had a beast motherboard, tons of memory, fast
processor, etc. box running NT4 Server with IIS-2 as my proxy/gateway,
and I needed to shutdown and reboot the box about once ever few weeks or
so - because it got "fussy" and would stop connecting. (it got to the
point that I was rebooting the machine weekly just to prevent this. It
got old fast...)
With the STN box, it just works and works and works.
