The Tranny's in our car's are transaxles.  They are also Transmissions.  The 
reason they are called transaxle's is they work as a rear end like in a RWD 
car.  Basically, they have transaxle gears that have 2 axles going to 2 wheels 
rather than a drive shaft going to the rear end.  
The tranny you were talking about is an automatic.  It has a manual shift valve 
body.  This is an automatic that has been altered to shift manually.
