Wash your Hands: The Right Way
Everyday we unsuspectingly come across germs that have the potential to make us
sick. These sneaky germs often catch a ride on our hands as we go through the
day. Recent evidence has shown that germs linger on surfaces like doorknobs,
phones, desks and are transferred through the hands to the mouth, eyes and
nose. Fortunately, by practicing good hand hygiene, we can stop these germs in
their tracks.
When washing hands with soap and water:
Wet your hands with clean water and apply soap. Use warm water if available.
Rub hands together to make lather.
Scrub hands thoroughly for 20-25 seconds.
Rinse well.
Pat dry with a clean towel.
If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are most effective in killing germs and
disinfecting your hands when soap and water are not available. They are
absolutely safe and do not dry skin.
When using alcohol-based hand sanitizer:
Apply product to the palm of one hand.
Rub palms together briskly until dry.
Use on the palms, hands, fingernails, grooves.
No water is required after use.
How to buy a good hand sanitizer
Choose a hand sanitizer enriched with natural ingredients. Natural ingredients
are gentler on skin and possess antibacterial properties effective in killing
bacteria.
A hand sanitizer should contain a minimum of 60% to 95% alcohol. Alcohol has
excellent antimicrobial properties.
When to use a hand sanitizer
• For routine cleaning of hands
• Before touching an infant/child
• Before eating or handling food
• Before and after attending to a sick person
• During travel or after using public transport
• After contact with surfaces in public places
• After using the washroom/toilet
• After handling animals/pets
• After visiting a hospital/nursing home
• After doing household work like cleaning, dusting, handling garbage, etc.
Note: If your hands are visibly dirty or contaminated with blood, use soap and
water.
