hi klaus,
i'm an inveterate linux user, and i have never had a problem, though you
can occasionally create havoc if you don't unmount a filesystem before
pulling it and re-attaching it (even the most well-sorted software can
be fooled by abusive users).
there are some instructions in the shimmer manual that describe the most
reliable setup for windows, though i'll let others comment on that.
it has been forever since i tried a dock with an imac i have at home, so
i can't help there, either. i want to say that it just worked?

If it is only one out of three it would still be OK.
Even a workaround would be welcome! (As long as it does not involve
opening the shimmer)
