That would require the existence of a 24x7 timeperiod. What if the config
doesn't know such a definition?
Did you look into the Nagios code? Does it simply insert the string "24x7"
(so it can fail later with "no timeperiod 24x7 found")?

That makes sense to me. The alias is afaik only used to add information to
notifications and especially the web pages. So if someone really uses this
information (like alias="the pink box in the upper right corner of rack
12") and sees a simple hostname instead, he will notice that something was
misconfigured. I don't think that setting the alias to the hostname will
have any bad consequences for the monitoring mechanisms.
