I went to Pro/Am day at the Buick Open the other day. Follow KJ Choi
for a bit and watched him hit is MFS 65 orange shaft about 300
yards and then stick it a few feet from the pin with his wedge (irons
are also Apache's, MFS115). Followed as many of the big names as
possible for a few hours.
It was fun watching the pro am guys breathe a sigh of relief when they
hit a decent drive with a crowd on hand.
My new favorite player is Jeff Maggert and I'm going to start a Jeff Maggert
fan club at clubmaker online. I was standing by the ropes on a par
five and a kid yelled for an autograph. It was after his second shot,
he was on the other side of the fairway and he said "I'll catch up
with you at the green". His dad was kind enough to say "won't
work...we're leaving, and he's not going in that direction." Jeff
strolled over with a smile and signed the kids hat and a few of us
acknowledged what he had done. The dad said to the kid "sometimes you
have to take the bull by the horns." Count on a future "you da man"
type when that youngster grows up.
Saw Tiger on the putting green as he was done for the day, he seemed
very gracious (he talked about making his amateur playing partners
feel comfortable under the pro/am pressure). I'd start a Tiger fan
club but I think that's already been done.
John Cook and David Toms also seemed worthy of a fan club. Most of
the guys were very patient with a very nervous group of pro-am'ers.

(I started writing this last week as part of a rambling reply to Dave
T, finishing it today).
Had to laugh when I heard the post tournament interviews on the Golf
Channel. Some guy asked a 5 minute question on equipment with all
sorts of technical things tossed in and I thought to myself "I bet
that's a Shoptalker asking that question!" Tiger handled it well,
cracked a joke about repeating the question, then gave his answer.
