Tom,
How did you dress up the part of the shaft that was abraded and now extends above the hosel?

The reason for the job was because the shaft was much too stiff for the guy. So, rather than buying another, softer flex shaft, we decided to try this, an old, tried and true method for making a shaft a little softer. I freq'd the shaft after pulling the grip but before pulling the head. Freq was 285 cpm @ 45", toe up. I pulled the head, cut off the angled tip of the shaft and installed it to a depth of 1 3/8". I plugged the bottom of the bore-through, cut the club to 45" and re-freq'd it. 272 cpm, about a full flex.

Keep in mind that this golfer is a scratch player with decent clubhead speed, about 108 mph. He's gone from a low slice to a high, gentle draw with this club. Moving the tip insertion from roughly 3 1/2" to half that did the trick for this guy. "Soft stepping" a driver is no different than soft stepping a set of irons, e.g., 3 iron shaft into a 4 iron, etc. You get a slightly softer flex and slightly higher ball flight . . . usually. There's no guarantees but it works for a lot of folks
