I finally acquired a GPS unit for my palm m500 and
bought the Intelligolf 8.0 eagle software for it. I
really find it helpful. There are 9 "objects" displayed
on the GPS screen (Front, center, back of green, 100,
150 & 200 markers, and 3 "custom" objects of your choice.)
The downside is that where I live there aren't any down
loadable courses that have the GPS data included. Most
of mine only have the course data.
Therefore I must "survey" the course the first time I
play it and record the data I want. I usually just
record the significant items of the hole (eg green
center, hazards, sand traps) and add on additional
items as needed in later rounds.
Intelligolf 8 allows you to input the GPS data directly
as well. You use Google Earth to zoom in on the golf
course, point to the desired object and write down the
longitude/latitude numbers for entry into intelligolf.
Usually only the last 2 numbers (of the
latitude/longitude) change, so it's not as difficult as
it seems. Again the downside is not all golf courses
are available in the high resolution mode needed to do
this.
One other item that is helpful is the shot tracking.
You mark the start of your shot and record the
distance. You can also designate which club you used
and the location of the shot (eg., right, left, long,
short). You upload this data from the the palm, along
with the scorecard, and Intelligolf will generate club
length averages from this data.

Hi All:
I am one of several golfers that are in the process of evaluating (
testing) G.P.S. systems.
Tests results will be published in a Golf Magazine in the near future.
Having said that, I own one of the Bushnell Rangefinders without the
Pin-seeker technology, and I concur that it's not that accurate, because
it is difficult to zero in on the flag from more than 150 yds. away.
Can't keep the thing steady enough, so I have to aim it at a sand trap,
trees, people, or other large objects.
Since testing the G.P.S.units ( Sky Caddie, Sureshot, Igolf ) I would
not consider getting anything but a G.P.S. unit simply because you don't
even have to see the green to get the correct yardage, you don't even
have to aim it at anything, just press the button and it tells you the
distance to the front, middle, or back of the green!!
Just my two cents worth!!
