Well, turns out that Ajax works to get them on but put too much on and
look out! It stays too slickery. A couple of them did o.k. though; the
cord and an old inside ribbed one. However, the shafts with duct tape on
them didn't fare as well. The grips didn't set up real well and still
turned and twisted a little. So, I blew them off, washed out the
insides, washed off the butts and tried again.
This time I used odorless mineral spirits, camping fuel, plain water,
and turpentine. Had to use the compressor on the plain water grip but it
went on fine. A small amount of double stick tape across the end of the
shaft and a dab of mineral spirits and/or camping fuel worked o.k,
without a compressor for the rest. The turps went on o.k but I think
it's likely that the grip will be screwed up somehow. And it stank! I'll
try rubbing alcohol next, I think. I'm just fed up with the need to
use double stick tape for damn near every grip. And solvent isn't
getting any less expensive. I'm not in any hurry, just looking for a
different way.
