Yeah. FWIW, in the OSS project I work for in my day-job, where we are producing an in-kernel filesystem and therefore have to be very aware of what kernel facilities are available in the target run-time kernel and which are not, we are forbidden from ever writing kernel version number based autoconf tests and must always write actual functionality tests for this exact reason. b.
