It seemed to me that way too, but since I'm not an expert, I can't help anymore. In addition, from my own experience I also had problems with the e1000 and e1000e controllers, regardless of whether they came from the kernel tree or compiled separately from sources picked up from Intel's website. And interestingly, the problems concerned Intel network cards integrated with their motherboards. In Linux syslog there were mainly entries about broken connectivity on the interface and reset of the driver. After some time the interface was dead and the system had to be reset. To make it even funnier on the same motherboard with Windows 2012 R2 Server installed, both built-in cards worked correctly. There was no problem with cards installed separately into the PCI-E slots of the same motherboard.
