I have a feature request (which may have been requested before, but,
heck here it goes again if so): would it be possible to show a tag as
a small badge somewhere on top of a picture using a previously
determined icon for that particular tag, similar to the way stars are
shown when pictures are rated. The list of keywords under a picture
can oftentimes be too long to be shown in its entirety and some tags
may be more important than others. This "necklace of badges" should
preferably be possible to a toggle between show/hide states.

Coming from f-spot I missed this too. In f-spot it's a simple toggle to display/edit or hide tags. However, I discovered that in shotwell if the space taken up by tags exceeds the screen real-estate you can get a full list by hovering the mouse-pointer over the tags. The same applies to the title. It's sufficient for me most of the time.

Tag management is a bit cumbersome at times and can be long-winded but I assume that it will evolve over time. For example, I'd like to be able to:

- select a group of images and right-click to get a list of tags that are common to these images, then be able to remove one. - with the tag list open in the left pane, slick on an image and enter a new tag, with the new tag being added to the tag cloud in the same place in the hierarchy that is open on the tag pane (rather than the top-level).
