Hi Jaakko, One day, we would like Shotwell to keep a fully-transformed version of every photo on disk, which is to say that all your edits would be "in the file." We even have an open feature request for this functionality in our bug tracking database here: http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/1798.
Until we implement this feature, there is a work-around that most users find straightforward. If you want a file on disk containing all of the edits you've applied to a photo, just export the photo using the "File" > "Export..." menu option. Shotwell will write all the edits into a photo file of a type and size of your choosing.
