Colin,
I believe this is the ticket related to the behavior you describe
http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/3565 , there are also a few related
tickets which are subsumed as duplicates. It's ticketed for 0.14, so
hopefully you'll see this soon.
In the meanwhile you can merge the newly created "duplicate" event into
the existing one.
hope that helps,

I am scanning slides into png files then using exiftool to set the
date on a number of slides then importing from folder to get them into
Shotwell.
The command I am using to set the date is, for example,
exiftool -overwrite_original -DateTimeOriginal="1975:01:01 00:00:00" *
and the photos appear in shotwell in an event Wed 1 Jan, 1975, which is correct.
However, if I then scan some more slides and set the same date on them
and import them then instead of going into the original event a new
one, apparently identical, is created. So then I have two events for
that date.
Is this a known issue? I am using Shotwell 0.13.0 on Ubuntu 12.10.
0.13.1 has still not appeared in the repos :(
