I've patched Shotwell today with the recommended changes from the gstreamer guys (bpp and depth parameters removed). Please let me know if that solves your problems.

That was not a good idea, now Shotwell doesn't generate any thumbnails at
all for my newly imported mp4's.

My log was spammed with these lines when restarting:

L 11597 2013-09-14 20:54:48 [WRN] VideoSupport.vala:254: Error creating
pixbuf: Unrecognized image file format

$ grep Unrecognized ~/.cache/shotwell/shotwell.log | wc -l
819

Why doesn't that error write out which filename is in question..?

But, since I know that my latest import doesn't have any thumbnails I know
it is at least these type of files:

That is the same type of videos that I've had problems with (with the grey
 thumbnails, see my thread with subject "[Shotwell] Re-create certain
 thumbnail").

I have added the gstreamer ppa (ppa:gstreamer-developers/ppa) and got
 upgraded to 1.0.8-1~ubuntu13.04.1~ppa1.

How can I delete these bad thumbnails and re-create them? I have ~ 25k objects in my db and would like to avoid to re-create for all of them.

The videos are typically 10 minutes or less. On any given event we will typically have photos and videos to download from our Sony CyberShot. The
