Thanks Joseph, unfortunately, that didn't seem to do anything:

alistair@Study:~$ sudo apt-get -f install shotwell
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
shotwell is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 7 not upgraded.
alistair@Study:~$


If I uninstall shotwell (don't know the apt- command for this) will that
also delete my database so when I re-install all my ratings are gone
anyway? Or will it leave the database so the re-install picks it all up
again?
