Uninstalling Shotwell will not delete your database, only remove the software from your computer. If you want to be sure, you can follow these instructions on backing up your database (which is a good idea anyway):

Thanks Joseph, unfortunately, that didn't seem to do anything:

alistair@Study:~$ sudo apt-get -f install shotwell
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
shotwell is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 7 not upgraded.
alistair@Study:~$

If I uninstall shotwell (don't know the apt- command for this) will that
also delete my database so when I re-install all my ratings are gone
anyway? Or will it leave the database so the re-install picks it all up
again?

 Alistair,
 Try Jim's suggestion here.
"sudo apt-get -f install" removing the old packages and then adding them
 again (libgexiv2 and shotwell).

On Friday we fixed the packaging problem with libgexiv2 and Shotwell. You shouldn't have to purge the PPA. I would recommend sudo apt-get -f install
and removing the old packages and then adding them again.

I think the Shotwell 0.15 ppa is broken, so I restored from image
 backup and
I'm back to 0.13. Now I'll just wait a while and hope for the best. :-)

For future reference, if you want to remove a ppa then install

 ppa-purge and
 sudo ppa-purge ppa:yorba/ppa
should have taken you back to where you started.

  Good to know. Thanks Colin.
