Because as I understand it, if I ever want to submit an app to be included in the distro repositories I will have to provide a bb recipe for it.
So I wanted the ability to experiment and test such a recipe.

But, perhaps I misunderstood the way this system works and it can only be used in a context of entire distribution build environment.
O well...

As I said before I can do fine with make for what I am doing now.

This may seem like a silly question, but: why do you want to use bitbake?

`Using bitbake without complete OE install' just seems completely contrary
to how this tool is intended to be used; what problem are you experiencing
with, as you put it, `the standard tools'?
